He was President of George Washington University from 1965 to 1988. Elliot served as UMaine’s president from 1958 through 1965 before he became president of George Washington University. Elliott began the Educational Opportunity Program and created the new faculty rank of "University Professor." He married Evelyn and they had together two children, two grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildre. Elliot passed away on January 1, 2013.
